Leonardo da Vinci produced the first Virgin and the Rock, an enigmatic painting, which comes in two versions. To afficiandos, its meaning can be hard to fathom.
Not so Virgin's acquisition of the banking end of Northern Rock, at least, we hope not.
Relief for the government, and we taxpayers should be thankful too, we think. Yes, there is a loss, but that was pretty much guaranteed when the previous government ignored historic conventions and failed to clinch a lifeboat on that first and fateful weekend.
So what does Sir Richard have? He's been itching to get a bank for sometime, but the Rock is really the spawn of a building society. However, this is likely not to matter and the new business should be the ideal vehicle to hang Virgin's financial products on.
